Irvin K

I have a deep appreciation of animation and kids movies, which make up a majority of my movies. Otherwise, my taste’s pretty eclectic – fantasy, musicals, family comedies, superheroes, chick flicks, and the occasional drama that strikes my fancy.

everything "Fault in Our Stars" wishes it was

To quote a girl I overheard, this movie was "unnecessarily good." It was romantic, sweet, intelligent, and just the very best version of what it could be. The small cast does a fantastic job, and the film is good about not overdoing it on the "you will cry NOW!" It was also one of my favorite movie-going experiences - in a climactic scene, when everyone in the entire theater was flinching and gasping and going "no...

really cute romcom

This movie is really sweet, a romcom version of Groundhog Day. Adam Devine is incredibly lovable, as he carries most of the film; the rest of the cast does a good job but it's his movie. This is a feel-good movie to watch on a lazy afternoon, highly recommended!

perfectly delightful romcom

Anyone who enjoys rom-coms will absolutely love this film. The cast is clearly having a ball, the film truly makes the most of its NYC setting, and karaoke will never be the same again.

just okay followup to breakout sequel

The Lego Movie sequel breaks the fourth wall of the Lego world far too often for my taste. I'm invested in Emmett and Lucy's story, not in the kids playing with them. Every time any narrative momentum builds up, it screeches to a halt with the live action interludes. The music is catchy and the jokes are funny, but nothing about this screams must-see.

entertaining comedy

This movie isn't terribly laugh-out-loud funny, but it does some very compelling character work. With a fun cast of characters, I was very happy spending two hours with them, hoping it all works out for them in the end. The movie does a good job of pointing out institutional sexism, but not harping on about it as the ultimate plot point.

perfectly done kids fantasy

This movie is the best possible version of what it could be: exciting, funny, charming. The cast is great, the effects look good, the script is rollicking good fun. This should become a generational classic for today's kids.

a masterful biopic

This film is the best version of what it could be, a reverent biopic of an inspiring woman, and a fascinating look at the intersection of feminism and the law. Felicity Jones is astounding, the writing is well done, and it's exactly what I wanted to see.

bad

Yikes, this movie was rough. It's overdone, and all narrative momentum gets killed by flip-flopping betweent eh real world and Marwen, and it just doesn't work on any level.

exactly what you'd think

This movie delivered on what it set out to do: a feel-good comedy about workplace shenanigans and family drama, very authentically set in NYC.

serviceable

It's a fine movie, I suppose - I was never the hugest fan of Mary Poppins to begin with, so this film wasn't really gonna be my be-all-end-all anyway. Anyway, regarding this movie: I just couldn't get past the fact that Mary Poppins is a total bitch. I couldn't stand her guts, and every time she was on screen, I just wanted to get back to the far more engaging Banks family. Ben Whishaw in particular - his sadness...

clever and entertaining

Animation really allows this movie to go balls-to-the-wall and indulge every ridiculous tendency of comic books. It's just so much fun!

really sweet story of empowerment

This movie will just fill you with warm and fuzzy feelings - a sweet romance, a fraught mother/daughter relationship, an emphasis on friendship, and a LOT of Dolly Parton. What's not to love?

good sequel, not groundbreaking

Ralph 2 is a fun sequel to a really cool movie, one that comes pretty close to matching its predecessor. By far the best part is all the easter eggs, and the stylized version of the Internet we see. Ralph and Vanellope are kind of beside the point, and that's the issue: the characters we fell in love with aren't much fun anymore. Ralph has been dumbed down, and is clingy to the point of toxicity. Vanellope is just...

an abomination

By far the worst thing to ever come out of the wizarding world, it boggles the mind that a movie can be this bad.

heart-warming family movie

This movie is just really sweet and makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over, and is a much needed representation of the foster system. It's funny and almost never preachy, but the message comes through loud and clear.
