Great until the last act, where it falls apart.

Ouija:Origin of Evil is a creepy period horror film, with excellent production values, which painstakingly recreates 1960s California. Its narrative about a single mother named Alice (Elizabeth Reaser) who masquerades as a psychic to help raise her two daughters in the wake of her husband's death is emotionally resonant, as is the drama that ensues after a real spirit in their house starts communicating with her youngest daughter Doris (Lulu Wilson) through a Ouija board. The attacks perpetrated on her family and her peers in Catholic school after the possession are quite freaky, but writer/director Mike Flanagan completely squanders these quality scares with a final act that's ridiculous and nonsensical for its introduction of an evil Nazi doctor and the spirits of victims he tortured in their home as the explanation for the movie's paranormal activity. These developments send the film into a death spiral it can't recover from, which is a shame because of how strong it is up until that point. By the time it crashes into an ending, the movie feels more like Ouija: Origin of Stupidity than Ouija:Origin of Evil. (less)
