Noticeably off brand for Pixar.

After hitting a home run with Inside Out, it's easy to see why Pixar waited until the end of 2015 to release The Good Dinosaur. The picture is clearly a foul ball, and its behind the scenes creative issues are palpable on screen. It's obvious that the film's direction changed, based on its conflicting animation and its confused story. As a final product, it feels very off brand for Pixar.

Environments in The Good Dinosaur are lush and filled with lots of rich texture that make them seem, so realistic, you could climb into them. Meanwhile, the movie's characters have a cartoonish, smooth quality that completely clashes with the background's visual style. And because the characters don't seem like they could exist in this world, the movie's voice acting sticks out like a sore thumb. As you watch the film, you don't imagine the personalities as they exist on screen, but rather the actor standing in a booth reading. This makes the movie difficult to get emotio...(more)

The Good Dinosaur's confused story, which focuses on a dinosaur named Arlo, is equally problematic. Is it a coming of age tale? Is it about a boy and his dog (or in this case, human)? Is it about overcoming trauma? Is it about learning your place in your family? Or is it a pseudo western about standing up to the bad guys even when you're outnumbered because it's the right thing to do? The Good Dinosaur is all of these things and none of them at the same time, which is another reason it's hard to get invested in.

These significant gripes probably make The Good Dinosaur sound terrible. It's actually not, especially compared to other animated fare, however it just doesn't feel like the Pixar you know and love due the lack of consistency in its animation and its plot. They're normally much more in control of their product and they will no doubt be again with whatever their next film is. (less)

The Good Movie

"Good" is an excellent description here even though I am using it as a different sort of adjective. The Good dinosaur is another solid, emotional heart string pulling movie from Pixar. Story is good, characters are fun and fully realized, a bit of humor and a bit of action, add it all up and you have a film that works on all levels. Comparing it to other Pixar classics though makes it feel like its just "good" but not great. The artwork and rendering of the scenes and animation is incredible, but the character design is....ok. Unfortunately the worst character design belongs to the main character and he's got a winey personality to boot. Its too bad you spend so much time with him. Despite this I found myself rooting for him the whole way. In the end its a good flick with a nice simple message, and there is a Sam Elliot T-Rex in it. Worth the see.
PS to the Filmmakers - What's up with all the shots of dino feet?

Merely okay dinosaur

While a neat little story about a dinosaur who meets a prehistoric boy on a journey home, the storytelling is just not up to Pixar standards, in my opinion. Still, kids will love it, and it does have its moments, as well as some fun characters (Sam Elliot as a T-Rex rancher is particularly wonderful).
