While the plot of The Revenant is a simple revenge tale, Iñárritu kicks the cinematography and brutality up to 11. DiCaprio's character gets put through the wringer so hard, I can't even conceive how they filmed some of the shots in this movie. There are long, wide, views of chaotic action and brutality that are shot in extended takes, each added second building on the breathtaking nature of the last. The attack in the opening scene, the bear mauling, and finally Glass's final confrontation with the man who left him for dead and killed his son, are all directorial masterpieces. DiCaprio and Hardy bring everything they have to this film, and it is beautifully brutal.

My only problems are with a few of the more weird dream sequences, and the film is maybe a little overlong. These are very minor gripes, though. An amazing film.

A pretty overwhelming sensory experience. Worth seeing for the amazing cinematography alone. Possibly overlong, although I was never bored and I guess the length helps give a better idea of just how long and tough Glass' ordeal was. The story and characterisation are actually pretty basic, but it's incredibly immersive and fascinating as a study of the human survival instinct.
See it on the biggest screen you can find.

A bloody beautiful revenge film.

The Revenant is a bloody beautiful revenge film. Its horrific tale of survival for the sake of payback stings with authenticity through its genuinely brutal performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy and its actual wilderness settings, where Mother Nature’s harsh chill is palpable. The movie's astounding cinematography and its impressive long takes constantly leave you wondering how writer/director Alejandro G. Iñárritu got these miraculous shots, however they tend to be a distraction at the same time. You'll probably spend more time pondering The Revenant's technical excellence than paying attention to its story. As a result it's hard to ever feel plugged in, something that's exacerbated by the picture's thin narrative and characters. Sure the film a gorgeous sight to behold, but it isn't really affecting on an emotional level, which feels like a huge missed opportunity for a yarn about a severely injured father clinging to life so he can avenge his son's murder....(more)
