marvel doing what marvel does best
Thor Ragnarok is a perfect example of what makes a great Marvel movie: a story that is impactful precisely because we’ve spent so many years with these characters. This movie, like the other Thors, is an absolute riot of laughs. The entire cast gets to vamp like nobody’s business, with Cate Blanchett having an absolute blast as the deadly Hela. The movie is an incredible end to the Thor trilogy, and really drives home the point that was apparent to most of us in the first movie: Odin is kind of the worst, and most issues come down to his terrible decisions.
My only criticism is that it’s a bit jarring to go from laugh-a-minute comedy between Thor and Hulk to Hela being all genocidal on Asgard. I get that the movie needed both, but it still felt weird cutting between the two.
A lot of fun. Probably the funniest Marvel movie yet, and at times an out-an-out comedy. Plenty of action, bright colours, crazy design, and general wackiness. If there's a problem it's that events on the planet Sakaar are so involving that when we occasionally cut back to Asgard it feels dull in comparison. Also the villain Cate Blanchett isn't given enough to do. Nice costume, though.
On the other hand perhaps the biggest and most pleasant surprise of the film is Tessa Thompson who almost steals the film in her role as an alcoholic Valkyrie. Jeff Goldblum is Jeff Goldblum, which is always a pleasure to see, and there are lots of fun little details and gags. Easily the best of the Thor movies.
Excellent movie! Definitely the best of all Thor movies. I loved the humour and the fact that Thor and Loke were finally forced to work together. Loved Dr. Strange, even though his part was far too small. I have great hopes for the next movie now.
